Harmony Within

It was one of those moments when time becomes irrelevant. My senses felt blocked to anything outside of the current task. With an inkling of doubt and a slight hesitation, I proceeded to strike as hard as I could. Or at least I thought I did. The brick sat there, staring at me. I looked up and at that very moment, I realized I had to go through with this. In front of me sat the master, several instructors, and fellow students looking on. As I was given the motion to try again, a voice came into my head….”mind, body, spirit.” It was my dad’s voice, with three simple words that had set an anchor to what I now needed to do. I collected my thoughts and cleared my mind. This time there was no try…I broke it. The year was 1994 and I had just tested for my black belt (1st Dan) in Tae Kwon Do.

So what does this have to do with holistic living?

According to Merriam-Webster.com, holistic means: relating to or concerned with complete systems rather than with individual parts.

Mind, body, spirit…..the mind-body connection is deeply rooted in holistic living and healing. There have been extensive studies on how our bodies heal and react to certain diseases and situations in relation to our current mental state. The mind-body connection is quite powerful. However, it takes more than just saying you feel a certain way to put a change into action. It takes your entire being, in a holistic manner, to manifest change.

So you mean I can eat an entire box of cookies and then just “think positive” and I won’t gain any unwanted weight?!

Well, not really. It doesn’t quite work that way. Just having a positive mindset is only one aspect of the mind-body connection. A complete set of individualized actions aimed at attaining wellness is the starting point of creating a healthy mind-body connection. This connection can be established through empowering practices including meditation, mindfulness, and other holistic modalities. These can encompass a variety of practices such as; journaling, hypnotherapy, yoga, Tai Chi, spirituality, visual imagery, and biofeedback. Creating a proper balance within the mind-body connection is instrumental in the process of establishing wellness.

Harmony within the mind, body, and soul is the path on which healing begins.
