Time To Come Clean, Part 3½
You have probably guessed by now that I do not visit the cleaning products aisle at the grocery store. Over the years I have developed and tested many recipes and combinations of ingredients to find simple and effective DIY recipes. In a recent post, I shared my Scrubbin’ Bubbles recipe. This week while mixing up a batch of it, I remembered a similar recipe I like to use on occasion for deep cleaning. I figured it would be worth sharing this simple and effective cleaner.
So here it is: Time to come clean, an addendum.
What’s the secret ingredient?
Hydrogen peroxide comes in a plastic brown bottle. It is relatively inexpensive with a multitude of benefits, including antiseptic and disinfectant qualities. The application it is best known for is the antiseptic qualities it offers. For many, it’s the main component in a first aid kit. I rarely use it for wounds, but that’s a whole different topic! With its disinfectant properties, it also makes an excellent household cleaner.
This recipe, unlike Scrubbin’ Bubbles, is not suitable for long-term storage. It’s best to make the required amount needed for the cleaning task. The chemical reaction that occurs when baking soda is added to the hydrogen peroxide causes the hydrogen peroxide to decompose quickly. Also due to the nature of the effervescent properties, do not store this in a closed container. Keep in mind that hydrogen peroxide has the ability to bleach certain materials so be sure to always spot test prior to use.
A few points to remember about hydrogen peroxide:
- Store it in the original packaging.
- Avoid using metal containers or utensils as this may react with hydrogen peroxide.
- Hydrogen peroxide may bleach certain surfaces.
- Do not mix hydrogen peroxide with vinegar or rubbing alcohol.
Sparkly Scrubbin’ Bubbles
Ingredients:
½ cup baking soda
1 teaspoon liquid castile soap
¼ cup hydrogen peroxide
Essential oils (optional)
Directions:
- In a medium bowl, mix together the baking soda, liquid castile soap, and hydrogen peroxide.
- If using, add essential oils.
- For a thicker consistency, add more baking soda.
- To use: apply with a sponge, scrub if necessary, and then rinse well.
- For more stubborn stains: apply mixture and allow to sit for 5-10 minutes. Scrub and rinse well.
- Perfect for bath, kitchen, outdoors, and more. Great for cleaning grout and tiles. Try this combination for spot cleaning fabrics. Be sure to spot test on all surfaces and materials prior to use.
